was a German-French composer and cellist of the Romantic period.  He was a prolific composer of light burlesque comic operas known as operettas.  His best know work is the Tales of Hoffman which was his last work.  It is part of the standard orchestral repertoire.  He wrote more than 100 theatrical works during his lifetime.
