Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic era.  He bagan studying piano from his mother when he was six.  He wrote symphonies, concertos,piano music overtures and incidental music.  His fourth symphony (Italian) is perhaps the most famous and performed regularly throughout the world.  Mendelssohns Violin Concerto is part of the literature every violinist studies. 

He has a rather conservative musical style in contrast to other romantic composers like Wagner or Berlioz.  Mendelssohn showed his talent as a composer at an early age.  He had completed 12 string symphonies before the age of 14. Hew was 17 when he composed A Midsummer Night's Dream.  His wedding March is a standard used to this day for wedding ceremonies.  Robert Schumann said Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century. 

Mendelssohn was also an artist who enjoyed working in pencil and watercolours.
